Portland Timbers and LA Galaxy finish square in pre-season friendly

MLS expansion franchise Portland Timbers drew 1-1 with the more established rivals the LA Galaxy in a trial match in Carson this week. The match, played on the outside pitch at the Galaxy's Home Depot Center, was the final piece of action for the Timbers who have been undergoing their pre-season in California.

Uruguayan recruit Paolo Cardozo gave the Galaxy the lead in the 48th minute after receiving a nice Brian Jordan pass from the right flank before Portland's Ugandan trialist Brian Umony leveled two minutes later with a neat finish from just outside the six-yard box. Umony most recently played in South Africa with University of Pretoria after a season with SuperSport United.

Timbers coach John Spencer was content after the hit out but said the club would now harness training in a little to prepare for their debut MLS season.

"In the second half, our energy levels were very good," Spencer said. "There was a little more bite in the game. In the first half, the pace of the game was a bit slower but to be expected in our position.

"I knew the fitness levels were not where we need to be. We've picked up a couple of injuries and we're trying to pull the reins back so we don't get any more injuries."
