Hundreds of soccer fans have demonstrated in Portland City center as a vote for $85-million in taxpayer backed bonds to renovate PGE Park and build a new stadium goes in front of the council on March 11th. Portland Timbers owner Merritt Paulson plans to put up $40 million in a bid for an expansion franchise. MLS have previously indicated that firm stadium plans are crucial for any successful bid.

Portland are in the running for two designated spots into MLS for the start of the 2011 season. Miami Ottawa, St. Louis and Vancouver are the other franchise bids still in contention.
