Chilean international defender Waldo Ponce has opened signing talks with Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez.

The 27-year-old could fly in this weekend to finalise the deal as he leaves Argentinian club Velez Sarsfeld and heads for Europe, says the Mirror.

The experienced international wants first-team football and will have to be persuaded that Wigan is the right move for him - and his demands may also test chairman Dave Whelan's budget.
