Police investigate fatal car crash outside Villa Park

Police were continuing to question a man arrested on suspicion of murder after a pedestrian was hit by a car outside Villa Park after the derby between Aston Villa and Birmingham.

The 26-year-old victim suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by a Volkswagen Golf outside the ground on Sunday.

The incident came in the wake of Villa's 5-1 defeat of Birmingham, but police dismissed speculation that it was fuelled by team rivalry.

Both men involved were Aston Villa fans, it was confirmed.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "Following some reports in the media, we would like to clarify that the 26-year-old man who died following the Villa match yesterday was a Villa fan.

"His identity is not being released at this stage.

"The 20-year-old male driver of the vehicle allegedly involved in the collision is currently in custody.

"We can confirm that he is also a Villa fan.

"The motive for the incident is unclear at this stage and we are continuing to investigate."

Police confirmed that the victim's family have been contacted.

A number of witnesses dialled 999 following the collision in Aston Hall Road at around 3pm.

But despite the efforts of paramedics, nothing could be done to save the man, who died shortly after arriving at City Hospital in Birmingham.
