Pogba humbled by respect of Man Utd captain Rooney

Paul Pogba admitted it was a great thrill to be given penalty duties by Wayne Rooney on Thursday night.

Manchester United were awarded a penalty on the half-hour mark of their eventual 4-1 Europa League victory over Fenerbahce at Old Trafford when Juan Mata was pulled down by Simon Kjaer.

Both Pogba and Rooney stepped up to the spot but it was the young Frenchman took the honours and duly converted by sending Fewer keeper Volkan Demirel the wrong way.

Pogba was asked by BT Sport what had been said to decide who take the spot-kick and he revealed that he was very grateful to his skipper for giving up the task.

"It's Wazza or myself, I told him I wanted to take it, and he let me take it," he said.

"I'm very happy to score that penalty, from a player like him, Wayne Rooney, the captain, to let me take the penalty is a big respect and I'm glad for that."

United received another penalty just minutes later when Anthony Martial was cut down by Sener Ozbayrakli with Rooney again stepping aside for a talented young Frenchman, who dusted himself off and fired home the Red Devils' second goal.

Pogba then produced a stunning curling effort in stoppage time of the first half for his second goal before a thunderous strike from Jesse Lingard had United in cruise control.

Former Red Devils star Robin van Persie popped up with a late consolation goal for Fenerbahce which had the Old Trafford crowd in full applause.
