John Carver is being linked with a return to Newcastle United.

Carver has been put forward for a return to the Newcastle United coaching staff as Chris Hughton ponders his options in the wake of Alan Thompson's imminent departure.

The Journal says former Toronto FC coach Carver would certainly be a popular choice, even if he is contracted to Plymouth Argyle for another two years.

Carver is highly regarded by many at St James' Park from his time serving under Sir Bobby Robson and was being lined up for a return by Alan Shearer last summer.
