Pires admits Houllier presence convinced him about Villa

Robert Pires admits Aston Villa's new French influence convinced him about moving to Villa Park.

The 37-year-old rates Gerard Houllier as a top-class manager, given his tremendous CV at clubs like Liverpool and Lyon.

He told AVTV: "Playing for Gerard was a big factor. He is French and I am French and of course, he is a great manager.

"Look at what he won at Liverpool. Now he's at Villa but it was important, the chance to work with Gerard.

"I know Robert Duverne a little bit too. I know he's a good fitness coach. I know Gary McAllister as well. I played against him when he was at Liverpool and I was at Arsenal. He was a fantastic player.

"Now he's here with Gerard at Villa and he will be good because he has plenty of experience of the game."
