A-League expansion club Gold Coast United has landed a major signing in Wellington Phoenix striker Shane Smeltz. The German-born Smeltz grew up on the Gold Coast before moving to New Zealand and part of his decision to leave the Phoenix was to return to where he grew up. Smeltz has signed a three-year deal which is a major coup for the new franchise, considering the 27-year olds great goal scoring record in just less than two seasons in the A-League. With 15 goals in 28 matches, Smeltz's strike rate is exceptional and he is sure to be a prime mover for Gold Coast United in the next few seasons.
