Philadelphia Union produce late winner to beat Schalke

Philadelphia Union beat German Bundesliga club Schalke 2-1 in a friendly match at PPL Park on Wednesday night.

Peter Nowak's side made it four wins from four against international opponents at the venue following recent victories over Everton, Chivas de Guadalajara and Celtic.

A relatively young Union line-up managed to edge ahead in the 21st minute when Lionard Pajoy headed home Keon Daniel's free-kick before Schalke responded late in the half through Sergio Escudero, five minutes after Lewis Holtby's 36th-minute penalty miss.

Philly kept providing chances and eventually grabbed a winner with two minutes remaining when rookie forward Chandler Hoffman slotted home.

It was a great experience for the Union's younger players with 19-year old midfielder Jimmy McLaughlin delighted to have been given the opportunity to take on Germany's third-place club.

"There's nothing better than game experience," said McLaughlin. "It's the best way to improve and be able to go out and play and work on things you've been working on in practice.

"It's a big step forward for all of us and it was great to be able to get some time in a great environment like this against a lot of great players."
