Philadelphia Union in desperate need of quality goalscorer

Philadelphia Union head coach John Hackworth has highlighted his desire to bring in a competent scorer this summer.

The Union defeated reigning MLS champions Sporting Kansas City 2-1 on Wednesday night to end a nine-game winless run and score their first in-play goals in six matches.

Daniel Cruz and Cristian Maidana were on the scoresheet to give the Union just their second win of the 2014 MLS season but Hackworth feels he needs a quality attacker to increase the side's output in the final third.

"The summer transfer window opening up, specifically in Europe, is a really good opportunity for us to go and maybe find a player that's coming out of contract that is a quality player that we feel can make a difference there," Hackworth said.

"So we're certainly doing our homework in all of those areas to try to find that player."

Union chief Nick Sakiewicz added: "I can tell you that as of today, we are very active scouring the marketplace to find and bring in attacking talent that can finish the large number of chances our vastly improved midfield is consistently creating during every game.

"It is exceedingly frustrating to watch us outplay our opponents in just about every offensive category and have the record we have at this point in the season. It is simply not acceptable."

The Union, who sit seventh in the Eastern Conference, have scored 12 goals in 12 matches this season but only two of their last four have been from open play.

Sebastien Le Toux, Leo Fernandes and Maurice Edu lead the Union scoring charts with two league goals each.
