Philadelphia Union head coach John Hackworth was not a fan of what occurred at the end of his side's 1-1 draw with DC United on the weekend.
With fives minute remaining, players from both sides were involved in a fracas which saw three red cards and players throwing themselves at each other in an incident that marred the game.
Hackworth feels that there is no place for such melees on a soccer pitch and was not at all impressed by the behaviour of both sides in the after-match.
"My opinion is that when two teams play each other it should be about soccer," said Hackworth.
"It should be about good soccer in all ways and I don't think that was the last 5 minutes. Maybe that's great for TV, maybe it gets people all excited, but that wasn't what the game was supposed to be about."
All the confusion came in the 85th minute when DC's Chris Pontius was brought down in the area with referee Mark Geiger pointing to the spot. Dwayne DeRosario stepped up to slot home but according to Geiger, there was an encroachment and the spot-kick had to be retaken.
DeRosario then missed over the crossbar to save the Union and minutes later things really kicked off when DC midfielder Branko Boskovic and the Union's Roger Torres clashed with the former being sent off. After that there were two more reds dished out to Emiliano Dudar and Sheanon Williams for poor challenges and the ensuing scenes which put a dampener on the contest.
