Philadelphia Union add Vartughian as assistant coach

Philadelphia Union have added University of Maryland assistant Rob Vartughian to their technical staff.

Vartughian joins Peter Nowak's team as assistant coach/goalkeeping coordinator just a month after helping Maryland to an Elite 8 finish in the NCAA Championship.

"We're very excited to add Rob Vartughian to our staff," said Nowak. "We've worked together on the Olympic team and I've seen how he developed players within the US National Team system. With two young goalkeepers in Chris Seitz, who he's worked with the USMNT and Brad Knighton, I'm very much looking forward to seeing them both develop under Rob's guidance."

Vartughian said he was delighted to be joining forces with Nowak and a new team to lead a new franchise in MLS.

"I'm extremely honored and grateful to Peter, John (Hackworth - primary assistant) and Nick (Sakiewicz - c0-owner & CEO) for having the faith in me to bring me on board," offered Vartughian. "My wife and I are really excited to return to the Philadelphia area and are eager to get started. This is an amazing opportunity and I'm really looking forward to becoming a part of the Union family."
