Peterborough will not enter a reserve league again next season, reports the Peterborough Evening Telegraph. Director of football Barry Fry announced the decision after attending a Totesport.com League meeting in London earlier this week.
Fry learned at that meeting that only 28 of the 72 Football League clubs intend to enter a second string in the competition next season.
Fry said: "The league put two formats forward. The first had 12 clubs which included Bournemouth, Crawley Town, Brighton, Torquay and Cheltenham but from a financial point of view, it just doesn't make sense to travel for up to four hours to get to the games.
"The other format, where they split the league into two, left us with Colchester, Southend, Stevenage, Oxford and Luton. That would have left us with only 10 games and the manager felt it would be better for us to arrange fixtures against teams like Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham instead.
"Everyone is struggling with money and as a consequence pulling out of the reserve leagues."
