Peterborough boss Ferguson: Everton's Moyes convinced me to retire

Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson has revealed how Everton's David Moyes convinced him to hang up his boots.

The former Manchester United, Wolves and Wrexham midfielder knows he could still be taking to the field as a player-manager, but he has revealed how talks with Everton boss Moyes persuaded him to stick to the dugout.

Ferguson Jnr said: "I'm still registered and I have been tempted - the fitness wouldn't be a problem.

"But I asked Davie for advice because he had been player/manager at Preston - and he advised me not to.

"The first week we came in we had a practice match on the Thursday and after it I told my assistant 'I can't play on Saturday - I'm worrying too much about what everyone else is doing.'

"If you're going to play you have to be one of the better performers every week. I was going to do it in the cup this year, name myself as a sub because we were struggling for numbers away to Hornchurch.

"But I thought 'If I put myself on the bench they'll think I'm taking the [Mickey]'

"Just as well - we were hopeless and only won it in the last minute!"
