Perth's Coyne keen on securing World Cup berth

Perth Glory defender Chris Coyne is keen to secure a spot in Pim Verbeek's World Cup squad. And he believes it starts with selection for the friendly against Holland next month.

Following the return to his homeland, Coyne is unsure if the move to the A-League has been the right one yet as he has been out of the international fray for a couple of months.

But he admits selection for the Holland clash would put him at ease for the time being.

''I wouldn't say desperate but it's probably getting close,'' he said of his World Cup chances.

''I've been out of the fold for a few months now, so it would be nice to get back amongst the boys. It's two [games] I've missed now, and you don't want to be giving too many chances to someone else to take your shirt.

''Put it this way, I'd like to get the opportunity to play against Holland. That's a given.''

Coyne admitted that the start to his season with Perth has been average but believes his performances are beginning to pick up and hopes the improve further in the lead-up to South Africa 2010.

''The first couple of weeks weren't the best, I was a bit short fitness-wise, but the last few weeks I've been pleased with my performances,'' he added.

''You set your own standards, don't you? With the lifestyle, the climate, the family, the friends, it would be easy to fall into a trap. But when you've been away as long as I have, you know what you have to do.

''Going to South Africa, obviously that's the pinnacle for me. That's what drives me on. But you don't get to go on the plane unless you're doing the right thing at your club.''
