Perth Glory's Tarka back but uncertain of future

David Tarka regrets attempting to play on through the pain of a quadricep injury received during the opening match of the A-League season.

The 25-year old defender played just once last season due to a badly torn hamstring and pushed himself too hard to play five matches earlier in the current campaign as he struggled to overcome injury.

"My performances at the start of the year weren't to the level that I would like," Tarka said.

"I know the potential that I've got and the capacity that I can play at and I wasn't reaching that. I missed a year of football and you think, 'What do you do?'.

Well, you want to play, you put your hand up, your team needs you. I guess I was letting myself down and letting the team down."

Having taken a month off to get his body right, Tarka feels he is now ready to contribute to the Glory line-up as the club pushes towards their first ever finals appearance over the remaining ten rounds of fixtures.

His availability for this weekend's clash with Queensland Roar provided some positive news for coach David Mitchell, whose teams defensive problems have been exposed all too regularly this season.

Another central defender, former Socceroo Hayden Foxe, remains sidelined indefinitely with a hamstring problem, while Dino Djulbic only recently returned from a lengthy suspension.

As is the case with so many A-League players as the competition readies itself to welcome new clubs Gold Coast United and North Queensland, Tarka is unsure as to what the future holds for his football career.

"That's another thing that's too early to tell," Tarka said.

"First and foremost from the club's perspective is that I need to be playing consistently every week. It would be silly for the club to enter into a contract negotiation with me in the state that I've been in. I've got to get myself fit and I'm sure (the contract negotiations) will come further down the track."
