Performance of Alexander pleases Rangers' Smith

Neil Alexander was handed a rare start for Rangers in last night's Europa League clash with PSV Eindhoven.

The 33-year old goalkeeper had started just four times previously this season with Allan McGregor taking the number one position under Walter Smith but the 'Gers boss was happy with the showing of the former Cardiff City man who kept a clean sheet at Philips Stadion.

"He handled it very well. Coming into the final stages of season, we need to make sure both keepers are match fit and have the required sharpness," said Smith.

"He played very well tonight, as he has done any time we ask him to play."

Rangers will be hoping they can get on the front foot when they meet the Dutch club in the return leg at Ibrox next Thursday but will turn their attentions to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premier League on Sunday.
