Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has stated that his side are more than capable of claiming triumph in the Champions League.

Despite all their success in the Premier League in recent years, City continue to struggle in Europe's elite company and they started off their current campaign in the worst possible fashion by suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to group rivals Juventus.

Not many believe that City can go all the way in this year's edition of the Champions League but Pellegrini is keen on proving the doubters wrong.

Speaking ahead of City's second group clash against Borussia Monchengladbach, Pellegrini said: "I don't think we failed in Europe - we have qualified for the two knockout stages in my two seasons here and lost to Barcelona who are the best team in the world.

"We have beaten Bayern Munich twice. Last season we won our last two games against Bayern Munich and Roma so we know how to do it.

"This season we lost to Juventus – a strange game."
