Pearce's England U21s beaten by Macheda penalty

Manchester United's Federico Macheda's 88th minute penalty was the difference as Italy's U21 side defeated England in Empoli.

Macheda, currently on loan to Sampdoria, put away the spot-kick with plenty of confidence after Manchester City's Leicester loanee Ben Mee brought down Juventus striker (loaned to Siena) Niccolo Giannetti.

Stuart Pearce's men controlled the match and never really looked threatened until the late gaffe by Mee which allowed the Italians to record a narrow victory at the death.
