England U21 boss Stuart Pearce is delighted seeing Manchester United defender Phil Jones progress to the senior squad.
Pearce feels it is important players get time on the pitch while on international duty, but says the Manchester United centre-back was close to earning his first senior cap and is happy to prepare for life without Jones at under-21 level.
"I think we have to maximise the potential of all English players," said Pearce.
"I spoke with Fabio and the reason Phil was with the seniors wasn't cosmetic. He was very close to starting.
"At the end of every international break I look and say 'how many young players were with the seniors and didn't play', and we have to make sure we maximise their football time.
"But I'm pleased for Phil being with the senior squad - he is an outstanding talent."
