Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew says he won't spend the club into oblivion.
He is keen to bring in two new faces - with a striker top of his wishlist - before the end of the transfer window.
But Pardew claims he will not break the bank to do it.
Pardew said: "Our requests and demands can only be met to a maximum that the finance will allow.
"I wouldn't want the club to put themselves at risk, particularly this club. because I know it very well. It's had tough times in the past.
"I can only ask as a football manager what we need. I've told (co-chairman) Steve Parish that and he's well aware that we need a couple more players if we can.
"People have a misconception about managers. The finances are so complicated and it's so expensive that you have to have a realism as a football manager and understand that the football club is always first."
