Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has warned fans to be patient in the opening exchanges against Europa League opponents Benfica.

Newcastle go into the Europa League quarter-final second leg looking to overturn a 3-1 deficit against the Portuguese giants who are on a 31-match unbeaten run.

And the Toon boss said: "Our fans need to understand that if we go gung-ho looking for two quick goals, we're going to get killed.

"Benfica have real quality on the break. We've got to be very intelligent and we must be patient."
