Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew has confirmed plans to be active in the January market. Pardew indicated that the bulk of United's transfer work for 2014 would be carried out in the summer.
He told the Evening Chronicle: "We will look to get one or two players that will take this club into a challenging position.
"This window we can be selective and constructive. I certainly wouldn't like to lose one of our big players for sure.
"But it will be the summer when we do most business. One of the players we are looking at for the summer we have looked at 15 times.
"It is about technical ability, character and whether they will fit in.
"We need more English players and more local boys."
