Pardew: Newcastle must stand firm as rivals circle for Carroll

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has demanded the Toon hierarchy hold their nerve and fend off interest in Andy Carroll. The big Newcastle No.9 has been linked with a £20million-plus-players move to Tottenham after scoring 10 goals in the top flight so far this season.

Pardew told the Newcastle Chronicle: "It (the transfer speculation) does get boring but it is not going to stop - it will never stop.

"It won't stop because he's a talent and that's what happens at big clubs.

"We have to have a big-club mentality and hold on to our best player."

Regarding the latest speculation over Carroll, Pardew added: "It just goes to show you his value at the moment.

"Andy just has to keep working hard and doing what he does best. His career path is here.

"He has already proved that playing for Newcastle United will not hinder his international career.

"So why does he need to go? He loves it here and loves the fans - long may it continue."

Pardew admits he has not singled Carroll out for a special pep talk.

He added: "I've not made a special case to do that. I've tried to cover all of the players the best I can.

"There will be situations where I need to make sure his welfare is looked after and his progression is looked after.

"That is something I'm looking at with my technical side to make sure his progression as an individual here is right.

"That will be important for him and important for us."
