Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew says he cares as much about the club as any fan.

Pardew is back at work and in defiant mood with the start of the new campaign a little more than five weeks away.

He told BBC Radio Newcastle: "I know sometimes fans think a manager is not emotional or a manager is not as emotional as them, that they are more emotional.

"Trust me, that is not the case. I am almost an adopted Geordie, trust me. On my travels, I have seen many fans this summer and they have all relayed to me that they really want us to do better than last year, and I do as well.

"My message to them really and truly is look, I have got a seven-year contract left to manage this football club and I am going to manage it to the best of my ability and I hope that what we wish for is what I can deliver."
