Pardew hoping Riviere double lifts Newcastle

Alan Pardew has his fingers crossed that Newcastle United's recent scoring form can kickstart a positive season.

The Magpies came from behind to draw 2-2 with Hull City on the weekend before edging Crystal Palace 3-2 in extra-time of their third round Capital One Cup clash on Wednesday night.

The catalyst for that triumph was summer signing Emmanuel Riviere who netted a brace before Paul Dummett headed the Toon ahead in the additional 30 minutes.

Under-fire Pardew, who signed Riviere from Monaco for £6million in the recent transfer window, was thrilled with the league cup triumph and hopes both the player and team's goals in their last two outings can help be the start of some quality form at St James' Park.

"Anyone who has seen us play this year will know the top of the pitch has been an issue for us," said Pardew.

"We've just not had that cutting edge.

"So perhaps the two goals on Saturday and two tonight is a big lift for the club.

"I'm so pleased for Manu, he's worked tirelessly this season, and he deserves those goals.

"That will give him a real lift."

The goals were France U21 international Riviere's first in his seven-game career with Newcastle, ending a six-match scoreless spell.
