Pardew: Big-name buys still on Newcastle agenda

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew plans to be active in the January market.

After holding lengthy discussions over the future of the club with Toon tycoon Mike Ashley, Pardew feels that the days of bringing in star names are not necessarily over.

He told the Evening Chronicle: "Personally we would look for another defender in the next window - without losing anybody. But we will have to see.

"What sort of signing would you call Papiss Cisse?

"I think it is a trophy signing in my view - they might not want to call it that.

"But £9m for a striker is a lot of money.

"You look at Premier League clubs outside the top four, and we are all spending the same amount of money."
