Pardew agrees with Debuchy red as Newcastle goes down to West Brom

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew felt referee Lee Mason made the correct call in sending off Mathieu Debuchy in the Magpies’ eventual 1-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion on New Year’s Day.

Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew felt referee Lee Mason made the correct call in sending off Mathieu Debuchy in the Magpies’ eventual 1-0 loss to West Bromwich Albion on New Year’s Day.

The French defender was given his marching orders just after the hour-mark for a two-footed lunge on Claudio Yacob and although the incident essentially lost the game for the Toon, Pardew was in agreement with the decision.

"I don't think we can have too many complaints,” he said.

"I think Mathieu has been our best player this last period, and he is an honest player. He genuinely went for the ball.

"There was no malicious intent, but you can't take off with too feet like that.

"We are going to suffer, and so will he. He will be a big miss for three games, and obviously it affected us today."

He added: "I thought it was a game we had good control over but unfortunately we couldn't get the breakthrough before the sending off. Obviously that changed the game."
