Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew admits they were in for Aston Villa striker Darren Bent before his move to Fulham.

Bent signed for the Cottagers on-loan yesterday.

"He was close," said Pardew to the Evening Chronicle.

"Close, in terms of the deal but Darren has decided to go elsewhere.

"I wish him all the best."
