Panathinaikos signing Fyssas: Hearts owner wanted me to stay

The defender, 34, quit Tynecastle last season after two years in Gorgie. He helped Hearts win the Scottish Cup in 2006.

Fyssas revealed to the Edinburgh Evening News: "When I said goodbye, Mr Romanov asked me to stay for one more year to help the team. No-one knows this because this is the first time I have spoken about it. I was with my manager and Mr Romanov called me and asked me to stay for another year but I had already taken the decision to go.

"I had two lovely years in Edinburgh and I wanted to leave space for the two young players, Lee Wallace and Jose Goncalves. I hope they take the opportunity and make a good career now because they have quality."
