Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock says Dwight Gayle is still working out his career.
Gayle has offered only glimpses of his ability since arriving from Peterborough in a £3.5m deal.
Warnock said: "I don't think Dwight knows what kind of striker he is yet, and I don't think I do really.
"He has all the attributes. And he showed he can play up front on his own.
"He just has to make sure he does that every time he is asked.
"He is the best finisher at the club by far, and I don't think anyone can deny that.
"A lot has to be down to Dwight now and how he sees. He has to come in every morning and want to learn and want to do better.
"And the last couple of weeks, that's what he has done."
