Crystal Palace academy chief Gary Issott has hailed the quality of Southampton fullback Nathaniel Clyne.
The new England international kicked off his career with Palace.
"He came to us at 13 from Tottenham and he was always in the middle of the group, just a quiet introverted lad who came to training and just go with things," the Academy director told the Croydon Advertiser.
"He was much like that when he came in as a full-time scholar. I have to say, he's the best defender I've ever worked with.
"We all remember Nathaniel at Palace. He's excellent in one-versus-one situations and he has got that pace and good timing to get forward.
"He's acquitted himself well and England have had two good results with him in the side as well, and that's a big thing to stay in the team when you're breaking through. Long may it continue."
