Mesut Ozil's move to Arsenal remains a delicate issue for Real Madrid. Real coach Carlo Ancelotti, quoted by the Gulf News this week, described the decision to sell "a mistake".
"I think I made ??a mistake when I gave him the opportunity to leave the club," said the Italian.
Covered in all the big sports newspapers in Spain, Real were forced to clarify Ancelotti's comments yesterday.
Indeed, Real press chief Carlos Carbajosa insisted: "We deny that Carlo Ancelotti has given an interview to the Gulf News newspaper.
"And we also deny that he has made statements about Mesut Özil."
Later, the newspaper released the recorded interview, where it was shown the quotes had been manipulated - but confirmed Ancelotti had spoken with their reporter.
Asked about missing Ozil, Ancelotti said: "No, because if we did miss him, that would mean that we have made a mistake."
