Owen set for crunch talks with Newcastle

Michael Owen is set to hold contract talks with Newcastle United in the coming days.

The Sun says Toon boss Kevin Keegan is desperate for owner Mike Ashley to hand the England ace a new contract.

Ashley, eager to reduce costs at St James' Park after admitting he needs fresh cash in the boardroom, is refusing to match Owen's current £100,000-a-week wages.

But the Toon supremo will look to make the hitman stay by offering a basic £80,000 a week as well as a lucrative bonus system.

Owen is keeping his options open. While there has been little interest from other clubs, he will not have been impressed by the lack of spending power given to Keegan this summer.
