Owen is Man Utd hero in seven-goal derby classic

Michael Owen instantly wrote himself into Manchester United folklore with a superb winner in one of the great Manchester derbies of all-time. Old Trafford was a throw-back to the days of the 1990's as United - playing 4-4-2 - managed to grab all three points in an amazing seven-goal thriller.

Manchester City felt they had done enough to rescue a point after two wonder goals from Craig Bellamy - his second on the stroke of fulltime. But it was Owen, after a pass from Ryan Giggs, who struck the winner in the 96th minute.

Before then, City twice came back from going behind. First Gareth Barry levelled after Wayne Rooney had opened the scoring for United inside the first five minutes. Then after the break, Bellamy and Darren Fletcher traded goal scoring blows, with both players twice getting on the scoresheet.

City were convinced they were going back to Eastlands with a point - and Shay Given the plaudits - after the goalkeeper twice denied Dimitar Berbatov with point-blank saves and also turned over Giggs' drive.

But it was Owen who popped up with the stunning winner to send Old Trafford crazy.
