Michael Owen is confident of reaching his best under Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan.

"You cannot wave a magic wand because there is a lot of work to do," said the ex-Real Madrid striker.

"Kevin is a great manager and there is no doubt in my mind something exciting will be built here. With the players we have, we are better than our league position suggests - and we will turn it round sooner rather than later."

"Kevin is the sort of manager who gives everyone a lift," added Owen.

"While some of the lads may be struggling with confidence at the moment, one of his great strengths is getting the best out of his players.

"From experience, there will be a lot of emotion and excitement about the place."
