Owen backing Man Utd pal Rooney to win Ballon d'Or

Michael Owen believes Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney will win the Ballon d'Or.

Rooney was ignored on a shortlist which did not contain a single England player following a dismal World Cup.

But Owen - the last Englishman to win the award in 2001 - insists that his Manchester United team-mate will win it one day.

He said: "I'm sure we'll have another winner and Wayne is the obvious candidate.

"He's still young enough. He's got great ability and he's playing for a team that can win the league so he has all the attributes.

"When I won it Liverpool had just won three trophies and I'd scored a hat-trick for England in Germany.

"You have to be helped by the teams you play for and playing for United lifts you into that category."
