Michael Owen has assured fans he intends to sign a new long-term contract at Newcastle United.
He said: "Kevin Keegan has talked recently about how much he would like me to stay at Newcastle United long-term and the situation is that the manager spoke to me in his office at the end of last week and said to me: let your agent know that the chairman will be contacting him soon to arrange a meeting.
"My contract is up here next year but I'm very happy here - this is probably the most exciting time since I came to Newcastle. I couldn't be happier with the new manager - I've enjoyed playing under him - and with the fans, and I'm in probably the best part of my Newcastle career so far, hoping there will be even better times ahead.
"I'm like anyone: you want to push for things, and get a trophy, and speaking to the manager about his plans, I know he certainly wants the same success. If everything Kevin wishes for comes true, then there will be a really bright future for Newcastle United.
"I've always said I'm happy here, and I remain happy here. A lot gets spoken about me and contracts and whatever, and has been ever since I came here; but the position is that we haven't started talking yet, through the indications are that the club is going to get in contact with my people in the not-too-distant future."
Owen struck both goals yesterday in Toon's 2-0 victory over Sunderland.
