Orlando City begin stadium development

2015 Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion franchise Orlando City SC and the City of Orlando have unveiled the development contractors for a new US$84 million soccer stadium in the city, reports, www.sportspromedia.com/. Populous, the company behind London's Olympic Stadium among a host of other major sporting developments, has been chosen as the lead architect, whilst Michigan-based firm Barton Marlow has been appointed as the project's construction manager.

Additionally, stadium development company Icon Venue Group will serve as the owner's representative overseeing the project, a role similar to that which it is currently performing for the Farmers Field project in LA.

Work on the stadium, which will be located adjacent to the Amway Centre in downtown Orlando, is expected to begin at some point this year.

It will be financed by a combination of public and private funding, with the club committing US$40 million to the overall cost and agreeing to cover any overruns.
