Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill says he doesn't want to mess the club around.
O'Neill indicated that if he can't improve the club's fortunes before his existing contract runs out in just over two years time he will step aside.
He told the Sunday Mirror: "I have a timespan, because I have a contract. If I have not lifted this side into a proper position, then I will move over. Absolutely.
"They wouldn't have to ask me to do that. They would then be able to give it to someone else who would be then better equipped if that was the case. I want to do it here, but I might need a full season first!"
