Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has urged fans to be patient after their 0-0 draw at Newcastle.

O'Neill said: "Expectations are very high for both clubs and if you speak to Sam (Newcastle), neither of us would have it any other way.

"Last year I came in about a fortnight before the season started and I was trying to learn about the team throughout the season.

"The new owner will definitely realise that this is a process that takes time. But it's the old thing about whether you get the time or not - it's a balancing act.

"There's no such thing as patience now. You can't change that. We want to try and compete and we're trying.

"It might be a wee bit more slowly than Villa fans would want but it's the start of a process. That's where Sam is at the moment."
