Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill expects to secure young midfielder Craig Gardner to a new contract soon.

O'Neill said: "I would hope to resolve a new contract with Craig and we have spoken with his father. He has been really terrific for us.

"I think eventually he's going to join the other three lads in midfield and we're going to have a bit of competition for places there."
