O'Neill brands Sunderland Europe talk as "nonsense"
Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill has branded talk of Europe as "foolhardy".
O'Neill saw his side thrash Norwich 3-0 on Wednesday — their sixth win since he took over — but dismissed talk of a place in Europe next season.
"I'm very, very pleased we're eighth but I am more concerned about the points on the board.
"It's a type of landmark to get to 30. But I'm very conscious of saying that because we might not move again.
"It's just my normal defence mechanism.
"We play Stoke at the weekend — a really difficult game — then you've got Arsenal and suddenly you lose a game or two and don't know where the next point is coming from.
"I've been there before. It's really important just to keep the players going. They're playing with great confidence and a bit of real decent desire." He insisted: "That's foolhardy, it's nonsense. Imagine talking about that on the first day of February. Seriously, don't get carried away.
