Oldham tried for Villa veteran Berger

Oldham Athletic have failed with an audacious bid to sign Aston Villa's veteran former Czech Republic international Patrik Berger on loan.

The Latics had been hoping to land the 33-year-old after discovering that Villa boss Martin O'Neill wanted the midfielder to spend some time on loan at another club, but the proposed move has collapsed.

Oldham's managing director Simon Corney told the club's official website:

"Obviously this turn of events is a disappointment and it didn't work out this time, but we'll be pursuing other avenues.

"Rest assured we'll be leaving no stone unturned as we look to put together a squad which can compete at the highest levels in League One next season."
