Oldham's Smith leaves lasting impression at Everton

Oldham Athletic centre-forward Matt Smith certainly made an impression on the Everton coaching staff on Tuesday night.

The 23-year old gave the Latics a late glimmer of hope when he came off the bench to nod home in the 64th minute of the FA Cup fifth round replay which his side eventually lost 3-1.

Smith has scored less than a handful of goals in League One this season but his physical presence, particularly in cup games against the Toffees and Liverpool, has impressed Goodison Park assistant Steve Round.

"We don't really see anyone like that apart from Peter Crouch, " he said.

"Whenever the ball's in the air, if a goalie's knocking the ball in the air from 75 or 80 yards away, if you're 6ft 6in then you've got a chance of heading it.

"You've got to compete with that like we did and make sure you pick up the second balls and flicks.

"He scored a good goal from a corner again."
