Old Firm duo banned for instigating mass brawl

Celtic defender Caldwell and his Rangers counterpart Weir squared up to each other at the end of the Hoops' 2-1 win at Parkhead, sparking an unsightly melee involving players from both sides.

Charged with instigating the brawl, the pair will now be forced to sit out vital matches for their respective clubs.

SFA disciplinary and referees chief Drew Herbertson said on the matter: "It is the case that David Weir and Gary Caldwell are to be reported for violent conduct which means both will be suspended for the next match."

Both players were called to the referee's room in the aftermath of the incident and will have been expecting some form of punishment.

An eventful evening at Celtic Park also saw Rangers club doctor Paul Jackson struck by an item thrown from the crowd as he attended to injured keeper Allan McGregor.

The incidents have all been included in referee Kenny Clark's match report and will be addressed by the Scottish Premier League, rather than the SFA, once they have received the details.
