Okon pleased with Australia showing in opening U20 World Cup outing

Australia head coach Paul Okon was happy with the way his side performed in their opening match of the FIFA U20 World Cup on the weekend.

The Young Socceroos drew 1-1 with Colombia in Trabzon, Turkey, only denied a win by a late goal from the South Americans.

Perth Glory's Daniel De Silva scored a lovely opener for the Australians in the 46th minute when he raced onto a sublime ball from Newcastle Jets defender Andrew Hoole before finishing with aplomb but Okon's side conceded to Jhon Cordoba with just over 10 minutes remaining, which left a sour taste in the mouth of the Young Socceroos boss.

"It was a great game, I think both teams showed their qualities," said Okon.

"We knew before the game what we were up against, South American champions, but we also had this belief that if we could perform the way we know we can perform, play our style of football, we'd give ourselves a good chance of winning the game.

"We came very, very close, we're disappointed that at 1-0 we had two chances to probably put the game to bed.

"We didn't do that and unfortunately Colombia punished us. First game, we're delighted and we turn our attention now to El Salvador (on Tuesday)."
