Sunderland assistant coach Charlie Oatway hopes Jermain Defoe can provide the cutting edge they've lacked this season.
The signing of the former Toronto FC striker this month has raised hopes that the England striker can provide the goals that Sunderland have lacked so far this term.
Oatway said: "With Jermain coming in, hopefully he'll be able to cross the t's and dot the i's by putting the ball in the net.
"There's been many times when we've been very close, but just haven't been able to put that ball in the net.
"Hopefully that will happen and the crowd will something to cheer about.
"I think they can see a change and the way the club has progressed in certain avenues; what we're trying to do and how we're doing it.
"But it would be nice to give them something to really cheer about."
