O'Neill didn't want to hear any treble talk back in 2001 - ex-Celtic winger Petta

Bobby Petta has revealed that Martin O'Neill would not let the Celtic players get ahead of themselves as they strived for the Scottish treble 11 years ago.

Dutch winger Petta was a part of the Hoops team that took out all three Scottish trophies in 2001 and he says that O'Neill, now manager at Sunderland, made it clear that there was to no talk of the 'T' word in the dressing room leading up to the great achievement.

"Martin didn't want to hear any of that kind of chat. And to be fair there was no talk of it in the dressing room," he told Record Sport.

"We might have mentioned it when we were with our friends and family but it wasn't something that was always on our minds.

"I didn't really think too much about it at the time. I definitely didn't realise how huge it was to be part of a treble-winning squad at the time. Only two Celtic teams had done it before us but I wasn't really aware of that.

"When you think how successful the club has been over the years it's amazing the Treble has been won just three times."

And Petta believes the current Celtic team is capable of achieving the feat under the tutelage of Neil Lennon.

"That shows how difficult it is and that is why this Celtic team can take nothing for granted," he added.

"They can now make history and even if the players don't realise it at the moment, if they do it they will look back with real pride when their careers are finished.

"The man who can really make history, of course, is Neil. No player has won the Treble on the field then won it again as a manager.

"It really would be a magnificent achievement, especially for a young manager who is really only in his second season."
