NYRB youngster Meara commits to Republic of Ireland

New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara has pledged his allegiance to the Republic of Ireland U21 national team.

The 21-year old, who has started all eight MLS matches so far this season, was born and raised in New York but is eligible to represent Ireland because of his grandparents.

Meara has been called up by U21 manager Noel King for the European Championship qualifier against Italy next month and has decided to commit to Ireland which has been welcomed by the boss.

"We've been following him for a couple of months and then when he started their season as No 1, that was a big statement," said King. "He's a big lad with good hands and he's a strong kicker.

"He's coming over for the games at the end of the month - we play Denmark in a friendly before the Italy match -and we'll have a good look at him then."
